First Stargate Universe Cast Member Announced
The new Stargate series Stargate Universe has been quite controversial since it’s announcement in August this year. Much of the outcry by fans occurred due to the cancellation of the successful series Stargate Atlantis in order to make way for the new series. As further announcements were made about the Universe characters many fans began to express concern that the show was going to be about teenagers in space and worried that the joke in landmark SG1 episode 200 which featured a “younger cast” would become a reality, the words “Young, Green, Slacker, Party, Teenage, Handsome, Cute, Sexy, Spoilt & Psycho.” used to describe the characters fuelling the fans’ fears.
After all this concern, the announcement this week that 47 year old actor Robert Carlyle will play one of the Universe characters came as a welcome surprise to many Stargate fans.
Carlyle is a well known Scottish actor with a long list of film and TV credits to his name including the British TV series Hamish Macbeth, and movies like Eragon, 28 Days Later and The Full Monty. Carlyle was also rumoured to be in the running for the next Doctor in the British TV hit series Doctor Who.
It’s interesting to note that Carlyle’s character Dr. David Rush is not of the previously announced characters in the series and while stated in some articles he will not be the show’s lead.
Universe is in pre-production with the writers working hard to come up with great storylines that will pull in a new audience and production is set to begin in February 2009.
Indications are that an SG1 and an Atlantis movie are still planned to be filmed in 2009 but will probably not be released until 2010.
