The Firefly and Stargate conventions held concurrently in Burbank, CA over the 21-23 November, 2008 were a huge success. Event tickets sold so well that Creation Entertainment have found a new venue to enable them to hold them both again in 2009. The Stargate event will be combined with Farscape the weekend of 6-8th November and the Firefly event will be held two weeks later (the same weekend as this year) 21-22 November. Both events will be held at the Marriott LAX hotel.
Special guests from Firefly included Jewel Staite, Ron Glass, Adam Baldwin, Summer Glau and for the first event in 4 years, the stunning Gina Torres. Stargate guests were stunt co-ordinator Dan Shea and actors Alexis Cruz, Kavan Smith, Jason Momoa, Rachel Luttrell and David Hewlett.
In addition to Q & A panels from all the celebrity guests, the weekend presented opportunities for people attending to get autographs and professional photographs with their favourite actors (Shame on you those who decided to sneak into photo ops without buying a ticket, it’s people like you that spoil the fun for everyone else, stealing is never the right thing to do).
Other sessions held on the main stages included appearances by convention sponsors Quantum Mechanix (QMX) and CGI artist Sean Kennedy and composer Bentley Ousley from the Firefly fan film Bellflower which included a preview of the intro for the movie as well as some behind the scenes tours. Jane Espenson talked about her involvement with Battlestar Galactica and other shows including Firefly and artist Jason Palmer spoke about his work. Scattered throughout the weekend where viewings of the winners of the music video competitions.
Early Saturday morning Stargate’s Alexis Cruz conducted an acting workshop and Saturday night featured a special cabaret for Stargate gold pass holders and Alexis and Dan Shea entertained the crowd. Creation’s famous dessert party with special guests from both events in attendance also featured the table centerpiece competition with some outstanding entries.
Tamara’s highly praised hand made glass Serenity plates (pictured above right) have both been generously donated to raise funds for Equality Now, they will be autographed by some of the Firefly cast members and one will be auctioned by Tamara in the USA and the other will be auctioned at a Can’t Stop the Serenity screening in Australia.
Musician Marian Call who’s album “Got to Fly” made its debut at the convention performed at the dessert party with an enthusiastic response from the crowd.
The Sunday morning breakfast was attended by the gold pass holders from both events and each of the Firefly and Stargate guests took a couple of minutes to visit every table to chat with everyone that was there.
Vendors’ Tables
The vendors’ room was abuzz all weekend with people eagerly spending their hard earned cashy money on everything from t-shirts and autographed photos to jewellery, mugs, artwork, posters, props. costumes and models.
