Stargate Atlantis Canceled
On the 20th of August 2008, GateWorld released the news that Stargate Atlantis is due to finish at the end of Season 5. Sci-Fi went on to confirm the cancellation the following day. The series will be followed by a 2 hour TV movie that will see a later DVD release.
In what seems to be an unusual move, the show’s cancellation had nothing to do with ratings. The ratings had been improving each season. Instead, in a joint decision by MGM & Sci-Fi and in an effort to “go out on a high” the success of Atlantis is being used to pave the way for a new series, “Stargate Universe” and move Atlantis “foward” into the movie format. In an ideal world, Stargate Atlantis, Stargate Universe and movies for Stargate SG1 (which are set to continue) could all run simultaneously but available resources limit the ability to do so, so in order to begin Universe, Atlantis had to end. Atlantis fans all agree that this was the wrong choice.
If you don’t think Atlantis’ time is over and you want to see more, contact Sci-Fi and MGM and express your thoughts. It’s wise to be polite and while you may be angry, swearing and throwing threats at them won’t help.
